چکیده

_______________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract The objective of this work was to estimate and compare the growth curve parameters for live weight of indigenous Venda and Naked Neck chickens and carry out some analyses to test the existence of differences in the growth pattern between these breeds. The data were collected from the two breeds of chickens that were reared from day-old to 21 weeks of age. Two hundred chickens (100 of each breed) were used. Three different non-linear models, namely Gompertz, Logistic and Richards, were used to define the growth curves of the chickens. Models were compared using Coefficients of determination (R values), A parameter values, the Durbin-Watson Statistic (DW) test for autocorrelation, computing difficulty based on the number of iterations needed for convergence and size of residual variances. The R were high for all models: 0.996, 0.990 and 0.997 for Gompertz, Logistic and Richards, respectively. Residual variances were 2240, 5924 and 1154 for Gompertz, Logistic and Richards, respectively. The Gompertz model was observed to be suitable for explaining the growth of the chickens. Breed differences were observed in the growth parameters of chickens. The Venda breed was observed to be late maturing and heavier at maturity while the Naked Neck was shown to have a higher growth rate, reaching maturity earlier but attaining a lighter mature weight. _______________________________________________________________________________________

Short communication Morphometric variations among five Bhutanese indigenous chickens (Gallus domesticus)

Morphometric characterization provides baseline information for initiating population’s improvement. Thus, the study aims to investigate variations of morphometric traits in five indigenous chickens of Bhutan. A total of 122 adult female birds belonging; Seim (Red Jungle-fowl type), Yuebjha Narp (Black), Khuilay (Naked neck), Phulom (Frizzle) and Shekheni (Short-legged) were included for live w...

Effect of Hatching Egg Size on Hatchability and Chick Hatch-weight of Indigenous Venda Chickens

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of hatching egg size on hatchability and hatch-weight of indigenous Venda chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). Three different egg size groups classified into small: (<49 g) medium: (50-59 g) and large:(60-69 g) were used in the experiment. A complete randomized design was used for the experiment. Simultaneously a quadratic type equation was u...

Evaluation of Non- linear Growth Curves Models for Native Slow-growing Khazak Chickens

Native poultry is a valuable genetic source with high resistance against diseases providing an important subject for breeding programs. The non-linear mathematical modeling of the growth pattern may partly explain the relationship between requirements and body weight to precise feeding that plays a vital role in the animal enterprises. A study was conducted to compare five non-linear models inc...

Genetic diversity and conservation of South African indigenous chicken populations.

In this study, we compare the level and distribution of genetic variation between South African conserved and village chicken populations using microsatellite markers. In addition, diversity in South African chickens was compared to that of a reference data set consisting of other African and purebred commercial lines. Three chicken populations Venda, Ovambo and Eastern Cape and four conserved ...

Genetic and Sex Differences in Carcass Traits of Nigerian Indigenous Chickens

Genetic and sex differences or variation in carcass characteristic and slaughter yield were studied using a total of 150 intensively reared and clinically normal chickens consisted of 50 each of normal feather, naked neck and frizzled matured chickens genotypes. The result showed that genotype as well as sex have significant effect (P<0.05) on carcass characteristics and slaughter yield at twen...
